Ministry Denies Hacking Charge
The Russian Foreign Ministry has called charges that Russia is behind cyber-attacks on the Pentagon unproven and irresponsible. The comment came in response to reports in U.S. media that computer systems in the Pentagon had been subjected to a massive electronic attack that Russia was involved in.
The Foreign Ministry information and press department stated that it was aware of the reports. It stated that the reports treated Russia’s involvement as a foregone conclusion and questioned only whether the attacks were the work of a lone hacker or if the Russian government had a hand in it. Russia has also been accused of involvement in computer attacks in Estonia and Georgia. “With global informatization and a growing common threat to all of the use of information-communications technology for hostile purposes, such ‘pitches,’ besides being unproven, are irresponsible,” the department’s statement reads.

The Foreign Ministry also noted in its statement that Russia has been the initiator of and promoter of the idea of the formation of a universal international legal procedure to ensure informational security for every member of the world community. In particular, the ministry mentioned that a Russian draft resolution on that subject was passed at the 63rd UN General Assembly, with only the United States voting against it.

The reports about the computer attacks on the Pentagon appeared in the U.S. press at the end of last month. Neither the Pentagon nor the White House has officially mentioned Russia in connection with them.
