Russian-Venezuelan Maneuvers Begin
A squadron of Russian Navy ships left the Venezuelan port of La Guaira on December 1 for the southern part of the Caribbean Sea. According to Igor Dygalo, aide to the chief commander of the Russian Navy, the active phase of Russian-Venezuelan naval exercises will begin within hours, RIA Novosti reports.
Russia is represented in the exercises by ships from the Northern Fleet’s heavy missile cruiser Petr Veliky, the antisubmarine ship Admiral Chabanenko and two accompanying craft. There are 1600 marines on the vessels. Venezuela is using three frigates in the exercises, as well as an amphibious transport vessel, four patrol ships, four coast guard ships, airplanes, a squadron of Su-30MK2 destroyers and 700 members of the Venezuelan armed forces.

Dygalo noted the exercises would last two days and that the ships of both countries would be under a single command.
