Rogozin Sees Threat to Ukraine
Ukraine will be threatened with collapse if it joins NATO, Russian permanent representative to the military alliance Dmitry Rogozin stated in a television interview with the BBC in Great Britain. A meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member states will be held on Tuesday in Brussels at which membership action plans for Ukraine and Georgia will be discussed.
Rogozin claimed that, if the Ukrainian leadership forces the country’s entry into the military organization, a “total political crisis” will occur in the country that will last for several months. “By comparison with that, today’s instability will look like just a soap opera,” Rogozin said. “In the broad sense of the word, there is a real threat of the collapse of the Ukrainian state.”
The Russian diplomat added that Russia continues to be concerned over the possibility of NATO advancing to its borders. “When that hostile political bloc nears our borders, it is alarming in the highest degree,” he explained. “Unfortunately, many NATO politicians look at the world, excuse me, like dogs. Dogs see the world in black and white. For us, NATO is a hostile political bloc and, therefore, entry into NATO is closed to us. They will never invite us.”
