Bureaucrats Are Mostly the Victims of Contract Killing in Russia
The number of contract killing has lowered in Russia in the recent years. But the trend has changed. Previously, for instance, the victims were mostly the leaders and members of criminal gangs, businessmen and entrepreneurs. Nowadays, however, the crimes are mostly committed against the bureaucrats, Russia’s Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika made clear in the interview with Vesti Rossii of Rossia TV Channel.
“We are carrying out a respective criminological investigation to clarify reasons of this situation and elaborate the optimal methods for opposing it,” the prosecutor general said, pointing out they are thoroughly studying the problem.

When speaking about the attempted murder of Samara District Court Chairperson Lyubov Drozdova (November 25), Chaika said: “The Prosecutor General Office has viewed the crime as a challenge to the whole law enforcement system of Russia.” A team of 25 detectives was set up for the purpose, Chaika said.

Asked about November 26 murder of Vladikavkaz Mayor Valery Karavaev, the prosecutor general pointed out that, amid other things, they are probing into the lead related to professional activities of Karavaev. A team of 24 detectives was formed, the crime had been thoroughly prepared and it could have been a sniper, according to the prosecutor general.

As to the probe into the case of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Chaika said: “Accomplices of persons that committed the grave crime are on the dock now… We don’t lower the pressure for investigating and finding the persons that had ordered the murder of journalist. I think we are on the right track.”
