Somali Pirates to Release Ukrainian MV Faina
The pirates of Somali and owners of Ukrainian merchant vessel Faina have reached a deal to release Faina. The parties met November 28, 2008 to choose a method to deliver money for Faina’s release.
The officials say the vessel, the ship and the cargo will be released in the near term should the parties agree on the money delivery.

The pirates captured MV Faina September 25 near Somali. The vessel was carrying 33 T-72 tanks and armored spares. The crew consisted of three Russians (all from St. Petersburg, one of them died of hypertension stroke), 17 Ukrainians and a Latvian.

The gunmen that first demanded the ransom of $20 million are now ready to release the vessel for $8 million.

In the wake of large-scale and high-profile hijacking, the authorities of Somali agreed to use force of cooperating nations to oppose piracy. Diplomats from the RF Foreign Ministry confirmed November 23 that Russia would take all actions sanctioned by the UN Security Council to normalize the situation at sea and near the Somali coast. Russia’s Neustrashimy is nearing the region and Russia has requested the cooperating state’s status from Somali to have a free hand when fighting piracy in the territorial water of that country.
