Ukraine Announced Desired Gas Price
The annual gas price for Ukraine should average less than $100 per a thousand cu meters in 2009, said people in the office of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.
Under the agreements that Ukraine and Russia reached in February of 2008, the gas costs $179.5 per a thousand cu meters for Ukraine, which is roughly 50 percent of Europe’s average price ($400) less the transit cost from Ukrainian border to the gas transfer points to Europe, said Bogdan Sokolovsky, who is the authorized representative of Ukrainian president for international energy security.

“The agreements attained at the presidents’ level in February of 2008 and at the level of prime ministers in October of 2008 sets forth the three-year gradual transfer from the current pricing formula to the European one [from 50 percent to 100 percent],” Sokolovsky said, adding that Europe’s average price is forecasted at $300 per a thousand cu meters in the first quarter of 2009.

With today’s rate of 50 percent to Europe’s average price, the price for Ukraine is to stand at roughly $150 in the first quarter of 2009, the official added, pointing out that, tied to the oil basket, the gas price will be shedding till the middle of the second half of 2009.

Provided that the prices in the fourth quarter are to reach the level of prices of 2009 first quarter, the average price should be below $100 per a thousand cu meters for Ukraine, Sokolovsky said.
