Court Opened Politkovskaya’s Trial
The Moscow District Military Court has opened the trial of Anna Politkovskaya’s case and met the request of Yevgeny Kolesov to withdraw from the trial at will. Exactly Kolesov had stepped in to publicly challenge the court decision for holding proceedings behind closed door.
The trial of three men accused of helping organize the murder of Novaya Gazeta investigating journalist Anna Politkovskaya is open for media again, RIA Novosti reported citing Murad Musaev, the lawyer of one of the prisoners at bar.
“The judge has decided to hold open trial. You are welcome,” the defender told journalists.
Judge Yevgeny Zubov ordered to close the trial past Wednesday, saying the panel refused to enter the courtroom before the reporters.
Next day, however, one of the jurors, Yevgeny Kolesov, stepped in to oppose the decision of judge. Kolesov said none of the jurors had demanded that the press wouldn’t attend, all efforts of the court official to persuade them to do it notwithstanding.
Meanwhile, the RF Prosecutor General Office challenged Judge Yevgeny Zubov on count of biased attitude. The court is currently considering the issue and will announce the decision on Wednesday.
