German Army to Use Russian Rails
The Russian Federal Customs Service has given permission for equipment, arms and other cargo destined for the German Army in Afghanistan to be transported by rail in Russia, RIA Novosti reports. Official Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrey Nesterenko made that announcement on November 20.
Nesterneko said that the Bundeswehr’s case is the first of its kind in the history of modern Russia.
Germany is an active member of the coalition of forces located on the territory of Afghanistan. It has about 3300 servicemen stationed there, by last count. The total contingent of international forces totals 65,000, of which almost half are Americans.
