Russia Creates Federal DNA Database
The Russian State Duma has passed a law to create a state genetic registry. The law will establish a base for the acquisition, preservation and use for identification purposes of genetic material (DNA). The authors of the law say that it will increase “the effectiveness of the fight against crime, including terrorism and extremism,” Vesti 24 television reports.
The law envisages the creation of a federal DNA database with information from unidentified bodies and biological material seized during investigations. Information from convicted serving prison time for serious crimes and sex crimes will also be incorporated into the database. The information in the database will be accessible to courts and various investigative bodies.
