The Court to Hear Case of Politkovskaya Murder Behind Closed Doors
The jury will try the case related to murder of Novaya Gazeta investigating journalist Anna Politkovskaya behind closed doors, RIA Novosti reported November 19.
The court made this decision at the last moment, as the jury refused to enter the hall in presence of journalists. Of interest is that the court had promised an open trial two days ago, specifying, however, that it would close it should a single juror complain of being pressurized, according to Interfax.
But RIA Novosti reported that no complaints were lodged. It was rather that the jurors weren’t particularly willing to show up before the reporters.
Novaya Gazeta investigating reporter Anna Politkovskaya was killed in Moscow in the fall of 2006. The main suspects are Dzhabrail and Ibragim Makhmudovs and Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. Exactly they are to appear before the jury November 19. But Rustam Makhmudov, whom the investigators view as the actual killer, is on the wanted list.
Another accused, FSB officer Pavel Ryaguzov is charged with the office abuse and extortion.
