Finns Want Radar to Watch Russians
The Finnish Air Force has allocated €200 million to purchase a new radar system, BarentsObserver reports, citing the Yle information agency. The Finnish military confirms that the number of violation of Finnish airspace by Russian planes has increased in recent years, leading to the decision.
Discussion of a new radar system first began in Finland after Russia stepped up army exercises in the Far North. It is reported that the radar system, the specific make and characteristics of which are not being revealed, will go into service within the next decade and will be able to deliver exact information to F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets. Finland now uses a system that was created in 1970 that is unable to give an accurate picture of changes taking place in the country’s airspace.
The Finnish Air Force has more than 60 updated American F/A-18 Hornet bombers equipped with air-to-land missiles and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air all-weather guided missiles. They are capable to hitting an enemy target at distances of 60 to 165 km., depending on the model of the missile.
