Russia Might Supply to Cyprus Missile Defense Systems
At the Moscow talks, Cyprus' President Dimitris Christofias will deliberate on potential development of military and technical cooperation of Moscow and Nicosia, Interfax reported.
“Cyprus is a small island state and, for understandable reasons, military and engineering cooperation with this country couldn’t be distinguished for its big size. But it exists and continues to develop dynamically. The expectations are that potential acquisition of Russia’s armaments will be one of highlights of Cyprus' president’s negotiations in Moscow, said a source with defense and industrial community.
The source said Cyprus is eyeing Russia’s Top-M2 short-range guided missile systems, T-90C tanks as well as the helicopters of various designations. The deals could be clinched in the nearest term.
According to foreign media, the 2009 budget of Cyprus provides for appropriating over EUR 200 million for buying Russia’s weapons. Russia’s armaments enjoy great authority in Cyprus, the source specified.
