President Warns Tough Year Coming
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told regional journalists that the coming year will be a hard one for Russia due to the world financial crisis. He said that the heads of the world’s largest countries are to some degree at a loss over the crisis because they do not see when it will reach its peak or end. Medvedev said that he hopes the crisis will end as suddenly as it began.
The Russian president noted that the crisis could cause some restrictions to be placed on government programs financed from the federal budget, but no programs have been cancelled yet. “The crisis may lead to restrictions but, in principle, what made it into the budget should not be subjected to any sequestration, any restriction, as a general rule,” Medvedev said. “We will do everything we planned. A new program is a problem, of course.”

The government may allot more than 5 trillion rubles to combating the consequences of the crisis, and that is not a final figure, the president said. The problems are of such a scale that they may require the allocation of addition funds.
