Russia Will Widen Gastarbeiters Quota If Needed
Russia may introduce additional quotas on labor migrants, Interfax reported with reference to Deputy Health and Social Development Minister Maxim Topilin.
In the RF Health and Social Development Ministry, Topilin said, they don’t completely exclude widening the foreign labor quota of 3.9 million. “The quoting mechanism is rather flexible. If in 2009, the employers find it necessary to attract employees above the announced requirement or the employers that haven’t participated in the quoting campaign declare that the requirement for nonresident workers has emerged, the size of quota may widen,” Topilin promised.
So far, the 2009 requirement for foreign labor is estimated at 3,976,747, Topilin said.
“It doesn’t mean that the existing quota should be spent in whole or that the given figure is the limit that couldn’t be adjusted if any changes on the labor market take place,” the deputy minister explained. Given the labor requests, the demand is the greatest for workers engaged in mining, construction and rebuilding operations.
