Merkel: Russia, NATO Should Make Nice
NATO should cooperate with Russia and convince Moscow that joint solutions to the main problems of the world would be more effective, stated German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the 54th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association. “We need each other. We are partners. It’s better to talk to each other than about each other,” Merkel concluded.
Merkel also approved a plan for Georgia and Ukraine to become NATO members, but said that they would not likely to be ready soon. Before the war in the Caucasus, Merkel was solidly behind Kiev and Tbilisi in their desire to join the organization as soon as possible. Observers say NATO indirectly supported Georgia in the war. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that the war was used as a pretext for NATO vessels to inter the Black Sea and to press American missile defenses on Europe.

Medvedev promised in his address to the Federal Assembly to place Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad Region to counter the threat posed by the U.S. missiles. He also stated that electronic jamming will be used against the U.S. defenses and missile regiment at Kozelsk will not be reformed.
