Obama Ignored Congratulations of Russia’s President
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev wasn’t in the list of world leaders, to whom U.S. President-elect Barack Obama called to thank for congratulations on historic victory.
According to The Associated Press, Obama accepted congratulations from nine presidents and prime ministers, returning calls to leaders of Australia, Britain, Germany, Israel, Canada, Mexico, France, South Korea and Japan.
With French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the U.S. president-elect agreed to meet in the “quite near future” to discuss global financial crisis and political situation. Sarkozy congratulated Obama with “brilliant” victory at election.
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev sent a congratulating telegram to Obama far back on November 5.
Obama’s election as the U.S. president won’t abruptly improve Russia’s-U.S. relations, forecasted Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Federation Council Foreign Committee. According to Russia’s senator, the United States and Russia will proceed with the random cooperation, mostly in non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons and fighting terrorism. The joint work of various international institutions under the major regional and global problems will continue, Margelov said.
Of interest is that Iran’s leader Mahmud Ahmadinejad congratulated Barack Obama on the victory. His statement was released by Iran’s state agency IRNA. Besides, Cuba’s ailing political leader Fidel Castro had voiced support to Obama during the election campaign.
