Russian President Dmitry Medvedev gave state awards to figures active in Russian public and cultural affairs abroad at a ceremony in the Kremlin’s Georgievsky Hall on November 4, the Day of National Unity in Russia. Recipients of the Order of Friendship were Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany, and Great Britain, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, as well as to Angel Gudierrez Ramirez, director of the Chekhov Theater in Madrid; painter and sculptor Ilya Kabakov, who lives in the United States; Vladimir Magar, artistic director of the Lunacharsky Russian Academic Drama Theater of Sevastopol; Petr Sheremetev, director of the Russian Musical Society in France, and German director Peter Stein.
The Pushkin Medal was awarded to president of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Ikuo Kameyama. Edda Niittae, head of the Estonian private company Kiviveski, received a certificate of special thanks.
The recipients of the honors were acknowledged for their “great contribution to the preservation, development and popularization of Russian culture abroad.” The president noted that the participation of natives of other lands in the life of modern Russia is increasing. “We see your desire for joint work and unity and we feel the interest and the open spirit with which you respond to our programs and propose your own projects,” Medvedev said of them.
