Russia Marks People's Unity Day Nov. 4
Russia is celebrating the People's Unity Day today, November 4, 2008. It is the fourth time that the nation marks this holiday.
The People's Unity Day was first celebrated in 2004. The date hadn't been chosen at random. Led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, the citizens-in-arms carried by storm Kitay-Gorod to liberate Moscow from Poland's invaders November 4, 1612.
The traffic in downtown Moscow will be restricted today because of the scheduled actions that will attract great number of people. The traffic police have addressed drivers to choose bypassing routes in advance.
Some 14,000 police officers will secure order and safety of the events dedicated to the People's Unity Day.
The plans are to hold today 74 public actions in 52 regions of Russia that will lure roughly 146,500 people.
