Food, Water, Fuel Low on Faina
The Ukrainian embassy in Kenya has taken measures to deliver food and drinking water to the crew of the Faina, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports. The Faina was seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia on September 25. It is carrying 33 T-72 tanks and other weapons. There were 17 Ukrainian citizens, three Russians and a Latvian citizen on board the ship at the time of its seizure. The ship’s captain, Russian citizen Vladimir Kolobkov, died of a heart attack while in captivity.
The Faina is under the observation of several American ships that are preventing the pirates from unloading the cargo of weapons.

“At present, diplomatic representatives [of Ukraine in Kenya] are waiting for confirmation of the delivery of the supplies noted to the ship,” a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman stated. The ministry noted the food, water and fuel are running out. The crew has been forced to take extreme measures to save their resources, running their diesel generator only 1-2 hours a day.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry states that the embassy in Kenya is taking all possible measures to take control of the situation. The latest information available, the crew members remain in satisfactory health.
