Gates Advocates New Nuclear Arms Agreement with Russia
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he would advise the next president to clinch a new nuclear arms deal with Russia, The Washington Post reported.
No matter who elected the president, either John McCain or Barack Obama, Moscow and Washington would have the chance to go to the bargaining table, Gates said.
According to Gates, the new deal should provide for deeper reductions, the ones that will be below the limits of Moscow Treaty of 2002. Gates also hoped that the current verification procedures would be preserved in the new agreement.
Gates delivered a speech on the nuclear weapons at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. It was the most detailed vision of the U.S. foreign deterrence policy voiced since September 11, 2001. Amid other things, the defense secretary emphasized that any state helping terrorists acquire mass destruction weapons would be liable to Washington in full.
