China Supports Russia’s Membership in WTO
China resolutely supports Russia’s admission to the World Trade Organization, China’s Premier Wen Jiabao announced today during the meeting of Russian-Chinese Economical Forum in Moscow.
China opposes the attempts to make that issue political, Wen Jiabao said, explaining that Russia is able to contribute to the multilateral trading system.

Also today, Wen Jiabao met with his Russia’s counterpart Vladimir Putin. Amid other things, the Chinese premier said that the economic cooperation of Russia and China should be of strategic significance in the environment of global financial collapse.

The RF Economic Development Ministry proceeds with the efforts to finalize the talks for Russia’s admission to the WTO, Russia’s chief WTO negotiator Maxim Medvedkov announced earlier.

All bilateral negotiations for the access to the markets of goods and services have been completed and the documents defining respective commitments of Russia are being elaborated, Medvedkov specified. The working group for Russia’s admission to the WTO will next meet during a week starting from November 3, 2008 to discuss the final wording of its report, Medvedkov said.

Some 20 of 1,052 sections of the report are yet to be finally agreed on. Three of them relate to Russia’s agricultural subvention, export duties and activities of government’s enterprises. The remaining sections are of purely technical nature, Medvedkov said. But even for technical reasons, Russia is unable to join the WTO January 1, 2009, the negotiator pointed out.
