Russia’s Election Officers to Ignore U.S. Elections
Representatives of the RF Central Election Commission won’t go to the United States to monitor presidential elections, Central Election Commission Chairman Vladimir Churov told the reporters.
Churov said they had twice invited their counterparts from the United States to Russia, in December (2007) and in March (2008), to no avail though. “The exchange should be mutual,” he added. Besides, “monitoring the U.S. elections isn’t easy, each of 50 states has its own federal election laws. You will have either to monitor in each state or to refrain from monitoring at all,” the official specified.
Regardless, two officials of the RF Central Election Commission have left for the United States as members of the OSCE mission, Churov specified.
Of interest is that, in September, representatives of Central Election Commission expressed their general willingness to help at the presidential elections in the United States. The respective statement was made by Igor Borisov from the Central Election Commission, who said that Russia’s observers would go to the United States as members of the OSCE mission. Russia’s quota at the mission stands at 10 representatives, so two or three officials may go on behalf of the Central Election Commission, Borisov supposed.
