Lavrov Calls Sanctions Illegal
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the American sanctions against Rosoboronexport have no basis in international law. Furthermore, according to RIA Novosti, Lavrov has promised that they will have an impact on Russian-U.S. relations.
The U.S. administration published official information about two-year economic sanctions against the Russian arms supplier and its subsidiaries, as well as companies in Venezuela, Syria, Iran, China, North Korea, South Korea, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. All of those companies are accused of violating the “Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Act.”The companies are suspected of distributing technology that can be used to create weapons of mass destruction.
Lavrov said that the U.S. move will not force Russia to make concessions on the Iranian nuclear problem. “If someone in Washington thinks that Russia can be made more accommodating to the American approach to settling the Iranian nuclear problem that way, they are mistaken,” Lavrov said. He added that Russian-Iranian cooperation is fully within international law. Rosoboronexport earlier characterized the sanctions as an unfair trade practice.
