Russia Wants Georgian Aid Controlled
Aid to Georgia from donor countries should be supervised to avoid Georgian remilitarization, a source inside the Russian Foreign Ministry told RBC TV. “In Moscow, they are counting on effective control being established over donor countries and organizations for the use of the funds and material resources for their intended purposes,” the source said. “It is important not to allow a new wave of militarization of the Tbilisi regime and a repeat of the August tragedy in the Caucasus.”
“The lack of discrimination and responsibility by a number of state, including so-called donors, in an issue like arms shipments to a crisis area, which Georgia definitely is, has already led to many deaths and the suffering of people who were in no way guilty. In the Foreign Ministry, we hope the international financial aid allocated for Georgia will be used for the good of the people of that country,” the source said.
An international Georgian donors’ conference was held by the World Bank. About $4.55 billion in aid to Georgia for restoration after the South Ossetian conflict was pledged by countries, organizations and private companies for 2008-2010. The United States announced $250 million in economic aid.
