Russian Destroyer in Red Sea
The Russian destroyer Neustrashimy has passed through the Suez Canal and set course of the Bay of Aden, RIA Novosti reports, citing Igor Dygalo, aide to the Russian Navy chief commander. The Navy ship will guarantee the safety of Russian craft in the area where Somali pirates are active.
Dygalo said the ship “has already practically begun its mission to guarantee the safety of Russian maritime craft.” He added that the Neustrashimy will coordinate its activities with foreign vessels in the area that are observing the Ukrainian vessel Faina, which is controlled by pirates. In addition, it will “complete a number of tasks in various sectors of the sea off the Horn of Africa with U.S., French and other foreign naval vessels,” Dygalo said.

The Neustrashimy is part of the Baltic Fleet. It departed from Baltiisk on September 24. Dygalo stated at the beginning of this month that the Neustrashimy would not use force against the pirates on the Faina. Ukrainian T-72 tanks and other weaponry are on board the Faina. The pirates are threatening to kill the crew of the ship, which consists of 17 Ukrainian, three Russians and one citizen of Latvia, of force is used against them. The captain of the ship, Russian citizen Vladimir Kolobkov, dies of a heart attack after the seizure of the ship.
