BWM Wants Tighter Import Control
The German company BMW AG has demanded that Russian customs ban the import of products containing its trademark without its permission. BMW has sent a letter with that request to the Russian Federal Customs Service. “We are suggesting that he Customs Service ban unauthorized legal entities and individuals from importing products bearing the BMX trademark,” a company spokesman told RBC TV. The spokesman said that includes automobiles, auto parts and other items.
The Customs Service press office declined to comment on the letter. It noted, however, that the BMW trademark was registered by the service in September of this year. Therefore, customs agents track the import of products bearing the trademark under article 38 of the Customs Code of the Russian Federation.
Experts say the Bavarian company is trying to fight unauthorized imports. Representatives of Japanese companies Nissan and Toyota are also reported to have signed the letter. Russian courts have repeatedly come down on the side of unofficial dealers, however. On September 10, the Moscow Arbitration Court declined to confiscate a shipment of Honda and Nissan auto parts, in spite of the Customs Service’s and the companies’ demands. A similar decision applying to Toyota parts was passed courts in the Eastern Siberia district as well.
