Sarkozy Calls Georgian Actions Inadmissible
The Russian reaction was disproportionate in the war between Russia and Georgia, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the European Parliament in Brussels. He added that the actions by Georgia that led up to that reaction were “inadmissible.” Europe, he continued was on the side of peace, the withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgian territory and dialog.
The world does not need a crisis between Europe and Russia, Sarkozy said, and it would be wrong to create conditions for a needless conflict.
Sarkozy had warned in an earlier speech that Russia could receive the impression that Western countries do not respect it as an equal partner and that it might think that only a show of force can bring it respect. Russia removed its peacekeeping posts from Georgia on October 8, as agreed to earlier. The territory were the posts had stood was transferred to Georgia in the presence of EU and UN Georgian mission monitors.
