Interpol Pres. Elected at Russian Meet
A new Interpol president was elected Friday at the final meeting of the 77th General Assembly of that organization in St. Petersburg. Khoo Boon Hui of Singapore will replace acting president, former vice president of the organization Arturo Herrero Verdugo, who is also head of the Chilean investigative police. Herrero Verdugo has led the international police organization since February of this year.
Herrero Verdugo took over the helm at Interpol after previous president Jackie Selebi resigned over corruption charges dating to his days as the head of the South African police.

The 77th General Assembly took place from October 7 to 10. Police and justice representatives from 185 member states of Interpol, the United Nations, European Union and European Police took part in the assembly. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was a guest at the opening of the assembly.

Interpol was founded in 1923. It is headquartered in Lyons, France. Russia has been a member of Interpol since 1990. The National Central Interpol Bureau was set up within the Russian Interior Ministry in 1991 to cooperate with police around the world and the general secretariat of Interpol.
