Russia to Monitor Transfer of U.S. Warships to Ukraine
Russia’s Defense Ministry will monitor the transfer of the U.S. combat ships to Ukrainian Navy, RF General Staff Deputy Chief, Gen-Col Anatoly Nogovitsyn told ITAR-TASS when commenting on the talks of the U.S. and Ukrainian military chiefs.
“Those are the mere intentions yet, but we will keep an eye on following actions of the U.S. and Ukraine. If the matter at stake is sustaining Ukrainian Navy, we will be tracking the size of the aid, determining for what purposes and targets it is being provided. We will be watching closely which vessels of the United States and of what class they will hand over to Ukraine. Only then, it will be possible to speak of any response of our party,” Nogovitsyn specified.

“Nowadays, Ukrainian Navy is in a sorry plight. But Ukraine got a sizeable portion when the Black Sea Fleet was divided. A different matter is how it proved able to manage it, how the expensive maintenance of combat condition of obtained vessels was funded,” the general-colonel pointed out.

Press service of Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported October 8 that U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Ukrainian Defense Minister Yuri Yekhanurov deliberated on potential transfer of the U.S. warships to Ukrainian Navy during their meeting in southwestern Macedonia's town of Ohrid.
