Russia Makes Armed Vehicles for Greece
Russia and Greece are preparing to sign an intergovernmental agreement and contract on the delivery of 420 BMP-3M armored personnel carriers to Greece, RIA Novosti reports, citing Rosoboronexport sources. The decision to buy the vehicles was made by the Greek Defense Ministry in December of last year and the official enquiry was received by the Russian side at the beginning of this year. The Greek military-industrial complex is also expected to take part in the contract.
Modernized BMP-3M vehicles have greater mobility and fire power than the original model due to a new 660-horsepower UTD-32T engine and improved firing system that allows targets to be identified at a greater range and while moving faster. Armed BMP-3M’s, like the basic version of the vehicle, is equipped with a 100-mm. antitank missile launcher, a 30-mm. automatic cannon and three 7.62-mm. rifles. Its defensibility can be enhanced by supplemental weapons.
A full-size model of the BMP-3M will be displayed at the Rosoboronexport exhibit at the Defendory 2008 military exhibition in Athens on October 7. Greece has 378 BMP-1 vehicles.
