Ukraine to Have Long-Term Gas Contract with Russia, Tymoshenko Said
The intergovernmental gas memorandum that has been agreed on by prime ministers of Ukraine and Russia paves the way for signing a long-term contract for gas supplies, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko announced Friday, RIA Novosti reported from Kiev.
Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko agreed on the gas memorandum yesterday. The document sets forth seven items spelling out direct contracts of Naftogaz Ukraine and Gazprom bypassing any intermediaries. Under the documents, the parties will shift to the market prices for gas in the following three years.
“The contracts will be long-term, at least for ten years,” Tymoshenko vowed.
So far, Russia and Ukraine have inked a contract for each following year. Ukraine pays $179.5/ths cu meters in 2008, but the 2009 price is yet to be determined. According to Tymoshenko, that price will be fixed once Russia signs a deal with Central Asia’s states, from where the fuel is shipped to Ukraine.
