Georgia Opposes Construction of Russia-South Ossetia Railway
Georgia opposes potential construction of the railway from Russia to South Ossetia, threatening that Russian Railway (RZD) will deal with international courts if the project is implemented. The respective statement was made by Nika Rurua, deputy head of defense and security committee at Georgia’s parliament, RIA Novosti reported.
RZD is studying the project of constructing a railway from Russia to South Ossetia; the matter at stake is the 149km railway with four tunnels, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin announced in Moscow not long ago.

Georgia’s parliament passed August 28 a resolution that calls South Ossetia and Abkhazia the territories occupied by Russia. The September 26 resolution of the parliament restricts business activities there, along with nonresident investments.

Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili pledged to impose sanctions on nonresident corporations and/or individuals investing in the Abkhaz and Tskhinval regions, which are the integral parts of Georgia, Saakashvili said.

According to Saakashvili, Georgia is consulting with European states and the United States about imposing sanctions on companies that will invest in Abkhaz and Tskhinval regions.
