Medvedev to Discuss Caucasus with Merkel
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in St. Petersburg Thursday to deliberate on the situation in the Caucasus, on prospects of concluding a new treaty on collective security in Europe, as well as on the issues of bilateral cooperation of Russia and NATO and of Russia and the EU, RIA Novosti reported with reference to an anonymous source with the Kremlin.
“The leaders will touch upon the key issues of international agenda and the situation in the Caucasus will be one of them. They will openly exchange views on the methods to restore durable peace, stability in the region undermined by Georgia’s aggression against the nation of South Ossetia,” the source said.

The plans are to continue discussion aimed at concluding a new legally binding treaty on collective security in Europe that Russia’s president initiated in Berlin June 5, 2008. The parties will also canvass some global issues, including relations of Russia and NATO and Russia and the EU, interaction in part of opposing the threats to stability, proliferation of nuclear weapons, international terrorism and global drug traffic.
