PACE Didn’t Yield to Sanctions against Russia
In line with expert forecasts, the attempts of some PACE members to strip Russia of voting right weren’t crowned with success, Echo of Moscow reported with reference to Konstantin Kosachev, who heads Russia’s delegation.
Twenty four members of PACE collected signatures to bring the issue of imposing sanctions on Russia’s delegation before the summit in Strasbourg. Under the bylaws, the board was to consider the proposal at first, deciding its further destiny.
But anti-Russia’s efforts failed at the first stage. The board didn’t support the initiative, Kosachev said, pointing out that the members either voted against it or abstained from voting. Russia carried no war on Georgia, Kosachev emphasized, adding that the matter at stake was the long interethnic conflict, which Tbilisi attempted to resolve by military methods.
A few days ago, Luc Van den BRANDE, who reports on execution of Russia’s obligations to the Council of Europe, opposed the idea of imposing sanctions on Russia and specified that PACE was for the dialogue that would involve Moscow.
In Russia, the calls for leaving PACE should our delegation be deprived of the vote were numerous. Quite a number of the State Duma members recalled PACE actions during the conflict in Chechnya, when the assembly was turned into a sort of rostrum for militants.
