Kamchatka to Get the Resort Status
Russia’s Kamchatka could have the status of federal resort, RF Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy Minister Vitaly Mutko said during the meeting that President Dmitry Medvedev chaired in Petropavslovsk-Kamchatsky city of the Far East, Interfax reported.
For this purpose, the minister said, the vital thing is to ease the system of border control. Some 600 to 800 want to come ashore from a cruise vessel. Executing their visas takes five to six hours and the chance is that the ship won’t run there again, Mutko specified.
The procedures should be similar to what they have in St. Petersburg, Mutko said. There, the cruise vessel’s tourists may stay in the country for 72 hours without any visas, they can even go to Moscow.
More and more tourists are visiting Kamchatka. In 2007, Mutko pointed out, tourism yielded 337 million ruble to the region, i.e. 3 percent of all paid services rendered to the population. Some 36,500 tourists visited Kamchatka past year.
According to preliminary estimate, the tourist flow of summer 2008 reached 40,000. Of interest is that the number of Russia’s tourists is growing.
