Ukraine Won’t Recognize South Ossetia, Abkhazia
Kiev has no intention of recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vladimir Ogryzko announced when meeting his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in New York, RIA Novosti reported with reference to UNIAN.
Ukraine won’t recognize self-proclaimed South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as it would contradict international laws, Ogryzko explained.
During the meeting, Lavrov and Ogryzko deliberated on condition of Ukrainian-Russia’s relations in view of Russia’s military clashes with Georgia. The conflict could be sorted out provided the territorial integrity of Georgia and inviolability of its borders are maintained, Ogryzko specified.
The differences remain, a source with Russia’s delegation said on condition of anonymity when commenting on Lavrov-Ogryzko get-together. Ukraine’s failure to understand reasons of the events in South Ossetia is surprising, the source pointed out.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko vowed earlier that Ukraine wouldn’t recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia. At the same time, opposition Party of Regions is for recognizing these two republics.
