Russia Ranks High in Corruption
Russia ranked 147th by corruption in a survey by the Transparency International organization, on the same level as Bangladesh, Kenya and Syria. It received 2.1 points out of a possible 10. Transparency International prepares the ranking on the basis of surveys of experts and members of business circles in 180 countries. Ten points indicates the lowest corruption.
Russia’s closest neighbors above it on the ranking are Kazakhstan and East Timor. Below it are Belarus, Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Laos, Papua New Guinea and Tajikistan. Of the countries in the CIS, corruption was lower than last year only in Georgia. It rose in Russia and Ukraine. Russia has fallen from 121st place in 2006 and 143rd last year.
Denmark, New Zealand and Sweden were the highest-ranked country this year, with 9.3 points. In fourth place was Singapore, which was followed by Finland and Switzerland. Iceland, The Netherlands, Australia and Canada round out the top ten. Somalia was the lowest-ranked of all the countries surveyed. The bottom ten also included Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Guinea, Sudan, Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq and Burma.
