Russia Denies Unilateral Division of Arctic
The RF Foreign Ministry has denied accusations of the attempts to unilaterally divide the Arctic, Interfax reported September 23.
The West lashed out at Russia for the attempted division of the Arctic, rooting the accusations in the elaboration of the RF new federal act on the southern border of the Arctic Region.
“This law doesn’t relate to defining external border of the RF continental shelf, the respective application for which, as it is well-known, has been considered by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf since 2001. As President Dmitry Medvedev pointed out, legalizing this issue is an independent and vital task to be decided based on the current international legal procedures,” the RF Foreign Ministry commented Tuesday in response to attacks of certain western media.
During the sitting of the RF Security Council, President Dmitry Medvedev emphasized the need to elaborate and pass a federal act on the southern border of Russia’s Arctic Region. “Russia strictly meets rules and principles of the international law and is firmly determined to act within the framework of existing international agreements and mechanisms,” the RF Foreign Ministry assured.
