In Russia, 2% Are Heavy Drinkers
The RF Health and Social Development Ministry has elaborated a draft concept for the state policy aimed at lowering alcoholization in Russia, Gennady Onishchenko, chief of Russia’s consumer right supervisor Rospotrebnadzor, said at the opening of The Nation’s Health Is the Basis for Russia’s Prosperity Forum.
The concept, which draft is currently considered at ministries and departments, provides for “restricting the alcohol consumption, excluding appearance of poor-quality alcohol product on the market, arrangement of comprehensive system of alcohol prevention and alcohol abuse amid the population, and the main thing, for shaping the healthy-life style,” Onishchenko said.
The beer consumption surged three fold during the recent decade, the official specified. According to the analytical narcological research, the growth in consumption of beer and low-alcohol drinks is evident and it is mostly ensured by teenagers and women of child-bearing age.
Onishchenko said 76 percent of Russians regularly drink alcoholic beverages, and 2 percent of the country’s population, some 2.8 million, “have been drawn into hard and unhealthy drinking.”
To the greatest extent, “the cynical advertising” is to blame for it, the official said, specifying that he is against the advertising that drags teenagers and young people into drinking. But alcoholism isn’t the problem of Russia exclusiviely. According to the World Health Organization, 2 million people annually die of the alcohol abuse in the world.
