Moscow Hails Appointment of Pierre Morel as EU Envoy
Moscow hails appointment of Pierre Morel as a special envoy of the EU for settlement of Georgia’s-South Ossetian conflict, ITAR-TASS reported with reference to Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Andrei Nesterenko. Mr Morel was once French ambassador to Russia.
Mr Nesterenko gave Russia’s broad approval to sending the EU mission of 200 observers to Georgia’s zones adjacent to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. “We regard these steps creating full-scale the stage-by-stage implementation of Medvedev-Sarkozy plan,” Russia’s diplomat pointed out.
At the same time, Nesterenko expressed disappointment about the failure of the EU foreign ministers to come up with objective evaluation of Georgia’s actions that led to aggression. When voicing support for territorial integrity of Georgia, they ignored that the said territorial integrity had been breached by Saakashvili, Nesterenko specified.
