Vietnam Backed Up Russia’s Peacekeeping Effort in Caucasus
Vietnam supports Russia’s active role in restoring peace in the Caucasus, Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem told reporters in Moscow after negotiations with his Russia’s counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
Vietnam supports Russia’s active role in keeping peace and promoting cooperation in the Caucasus region, Pham Gia Khiem said. On August 8, Georgia initiated military action in South Ossetia and brought fire to the republic’s capital Tskhinvali. Then, Georgian troops almost completely destroyed Tskhinvali and lots of settlements. According to South Ossetia’s authorities, the death toll exceeded 1,500 civilians.

Russia moved troops to South Ossetia to defend Russia’s citizens living there. The ships of the RF Black Sea Fleet neared Abkhazia to prevent aggression and deaths amid the civilians, including the Russians that were spending vacation there. On August 12, Russia announced the end of the operation and completed withdrawal of troops ten days later.
