Romania Wants Anti-Missile System Too
Romania wants to host a NATO missile defense system to defend the European Union against missile attack, Romanian Defense Minister Teodor Melescanu stated after negotiations with Greek Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis, Agence France Presse reported on September 11. “NATO should develop a plan for a missile-defense shield to defend the countries of the EU, including Bulgaria, Greece and Romania,” Melescanu stated. He added that Romania “may take part in that project in the future.”
“In our opinion,” Melescanu said, “it would be better for the EU countries to have their own defense system in case of… an attack by a third country,” Melescanu said. He emphasized that he was not referring to the American missile defense system, which, in spite of Russian protests, the Czech Republic and Poland will host.
The idea of creating their own missile defense system has been discussed by EU member states since the beginning of the 2000s. The first steps in that direction were taken only in 2006, however.
