U.S. Supports Russia in WTO
U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle stated in a live interview on radio station Echo of Moscow that the United States supports Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization. “We very actively support Russia’s desire to join the WTO, but it depends on multilateral and bilateral agreements,” he noted.
The ambassador also noted that the U.S. continues to support Georgia’s desire to join NATO as well. “We have always supported that desire, but it depends on many factors. In particular a country has to be ready to join in the common mission – it’s not free,” he said of Georgia’s potential NATO membership.

Beyrle said he saw no threat of a return to the Cold War. “A cold war is mainly characterized by ideological confrontation, but there is no such confrontation between Moscow and Washington now,” he observed. He commented on Russian-American relations that “We would like our relations to be constructive, productive and even warm. It is hard to speak of warmth now, but we have to aim for that.” He added that a meeting of the countries’ presidents to discuss Georgia was possible.
