Russia’s Strategic Bombers Landed in Venezuela
Two strategic bombers of Russia’s Air Force landed in Libertador military airport of Venezuela, Russia’s defense officials said. Tu-160s will practice above neutral waters for the next few days and then return to Russia.
Russia resumed its long-range air patrols August 17, 2007. Air Force Commander General-Colonel Alexander Zelin announced in early August of 2008 that the aerodromes of other states might be used for the purposes of long-range aviation.
Zelin said then Russia’s jets were based on their own aerodromes and the aerodromes of other departments as well as on the aerodromes of certain CIS members.
Strategic supersonic bomber Tu-160 was designed to destroy enemy’s targets in the far-distant areas; its flight range reaches 13,000km and it is armed with 12 cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.
This November, Russia will hold the exercise in the Atlantic Ocean jointly with the vessels of Venezuela. Russia will be represented by the North Fleet ships led by Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) nuclear cruiser. The exercise had been planned during a year, while the final decision on its holding was taken in July, during the meeting of Russia’s and Venezuela’s presidents.
