Russia’s President, Defense Minister Determined the Strength of Military in Caucasus
The RF authorities have agreed with South Ossetia and Abkhazia about the strength and dislocation of Russia’s military in the region. Each of the republics will have roughly 3,800 soldiers and officers, Interfax reported with reference to the RF Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.
Some 588 peacekeepers of Russia had been stationed in South Ossetia before the assault of Georgia. Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov also reported to President Dmitry Medvedev about the structure and places of dislocation of Russia’s troops. In South Ossetia, the military will be deployed in Java and Tskhinvali, and the peacekeepers will remain at previous positions in Abkhazia.
Of interest is that South Ossetia urged Moscow to deploy military bases on its soil, while Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh declared that there would be no new bases of Russia in the republic.
