Russia’s Army to Be Armed with Wheeled Tanks
Russia’s Military & Industrial Co. will soon launch large-scale supplies of next-generation armored vehicles to the Armed Forces. The military will receive BTR-90 armored troop carriers, the so-called wheeled tanks, in 2009 to 2015, ARMS-TASS reported.
Arzamas made the first BTR-90 armored troop carriers in 2005. The wheeled tank is expected to replace BTR-60s and then BTR-70s and BTR-80s in Russia’s Army.
BTR-90 has no analogue in the world in terms of combination of basic tactical and technical characteristics. Its major peculiarity is Berezhok system that enabled to significantly improve the firing capacity.
The system consists of 2A42 automatic gun of 30mm, PKT machine gun of 7.62 caliber, automatic system of fire control, four launchers of Cornet-E antitank guided missiles and AG-30M grenade machine gun of 30mm.
BTR-90 is capable of opposing tanks at the range of up to 5,500m and destroying light engineering facilities and helicopters at the distance of up to 2,500m and manpower at the distance of up to 4,000m. Stabilized in two surfaces, BTR-90 may fire when moving cross-country.
BTR-90 is exhibited at the MVSV-2008 arms show held in Moscow August 20 to 24.
