Gorbachev: Saakashvili Doesn’t Deserve Trust, but This Is for Georgians to Decide
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili doesn’t deserve trust, but this for the Georgians to decide, the USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev said Thursday in the interview with CNN.
In the air of CNN’s Larry King program, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev said Russia moved forces to South Ossetia in response to what was happening to Tskhinvali, as it needed to address it, to address devastation of the city, where sophisticated weapons were used, to address the killing of people. The clash was provoked by Georgia, Gorbachev emphasized.

“This was the use of sophisticated weapons against a small town, against sleeping people. This was a barbaric assault,” CCN quoted Gorbachev as saying.

Asked whether the Russians will stay in Georgia, the former president said Russia has a mandate and should stay within the peacekeeping mandate there.

Moscow doesn’t seek the change of leadership in Georgia, according to Gorbachev. “Saakashvili doesn’t deserve trust but this is for the Georgians to decide.”

Gorbachev also said the U.S. support to Georgia jeopardizes the relations with Russia. “There is a chance for our two countries to develop a new agenda for cooperation so as to promote both U.S. and Russia interests, and the interests of other countries, and the interests of stability, particularly in the hotspots in different continents,” CNN quoted as saying once the president of the USSR.
