U.S. Cancelled Another Joint Exercise with Russia
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced August 14 the refusal of the United States to take part in the FRUKUS-2008 naval exercise, France Presse reported. Gates also informed about cancellation of Vigilant Eagle exercise of the United States, Canada and Russia, which were to begin August 20.
Washington will revise all military cooperation with Moscow and the result of this reconsideration will depend on Russia’s actions in the nearest days.
Russia hasn’t abandoned the plans to hold FRUKUS-2008, General Staff Deputy Chief Anatoly Nogovitsyn made clear August 14. “No decisions have been taken denying the mere fact of carrying out this action.”
“So far, only one state announced a possible variant, having done it not very distinctly. Other states, according to data available to us, are assiduously preparing for it,” Nogovitsyn said at the news conference August 14.
The ships of Russia, France, the United States and Britain are expected to take part in FRUKUS-2008 naval exercise slated for August 15 to 23. The venue is the Sea of Japan and the water area of Vladivostok, the ground stage will be held in Vladivostok as well.
