Georgia Set to Flooding Tskhinvali
Georgia has opened the irrigation channel and is flooding western Tskhinvali, South Ossetia’s government spokesman Irina Gagloeva told RBC. They want to flood basements and deprive civilians of any chance to hide from shelling attacks, Gagloeva supposed.
“According to data available to us, Georgia is aimed at carpet bombing of Tskhinvali. If the water floods cellars, the people will have no place to hide from shooting,” the official added.
Southern Tskhinvali was under the snipers’ attack past night. “It was a mobile team of snipers. They were moving in the area with a clear view of the city, shooting at residents and outposts of enforcement structures of South Ossetia. Two were wounded as a result of shooting,” Gagloeva said.
Eighty bodies were found past day, Gagloeva went on. Rescuers were collecting bodies under destroyed buildings, saving the survivers, mostly women, children, old people.
There are lots of destroyed armored vehicles of Georgia in Tskhinvali, the death toll of Georgian soldiers is long as well. Forty bodies were found yesterday. There were bodies in burnt combat vehicles, Gagloeva specified.
The resolve of Tbilisi to proceed with attempts to conquer Tskhinvali was clear even on Sunday. All statements about the withdrawal from unrecognized province notwithstanding, additional units of Georgia’s Defense Ministry are nearing the borders of South Ossetia. The sources say, roughly 8,000 servicemen of Georgia and 100 tanks are heading for that breakaway province.
South Ossetia’s capital Tskhinvali is currently under control of Russia’s peacekeepers.
