Medvedev Rejected Phone Conversation with Saakashvili
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev has rejected a phone conversation initiated by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Irakli Alasania, Georgian ambassador to the United Nations, made the respective statement. Alasania said Russia’s president rejected direct contacts with the president of Georgia. First Alasania and then the U.S. ambassador attributed that decision to the general unwillingness of Moscow to hold negotiations and to its desire to aggravate the conflict.
“What a decent man would communicate with M. Saakashvili after what has happened?” rebuffed Russia’s Ambassador to the U.N. Vitaly Churkin, pointing out that Saakashvili had been pledging to avoid using force against Abkhazia and South Ossetia for a few years and that he has breached all previous agreements.
Regardless, Russia is ready for negotiations with Georgia, where the basic condition will be the withdrawal of Georgian troops from South Ossetia, total ceasefire and Georgia’s-signed agreement on the force nonuse in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
